I have to RANT for a moment...

Sometimes I think the American Public is stupid and blind.

The $700 billion Bailout is not what most Americans think it is. The government is buying assets that are basically on sale, big time sale. They are not just bailing out those big stupid companies.

What would it cost the Americans to not pass this? Not passing it today and Today alone the Stock Market erased $1.2 trillion from very important items like your IRAs, 401ks, etc. And your parents and grandparents IRAs and 401ks.

You think you are not going to be effected by this? Want more where that came from?

If your neighbor were smoking in bed and his house caught on fire, what would you think? Well, when the fire spreads to your house, it is already too late. Think ahead people, think ahead!

Just a quick update - I told you too soon that I was back in business. Right after I posted that blog I was listening to Hk read one of her books that she reads each night. She kept saying her throat hurt. I told her not to complain and that she needed to drink more water. I then went and got the flashlight - I have a two year old and the emergency flashlights in my nightstand and my husband's were both missing. I about passed out when I saw her throat. I've NEVER seen that much white nasty stuff in all my life. It was everywhere - on her tonsils, the back of her throat, her uvula, the sides of her cheeks. Now I feel guilty for telling her not to complain because she's been hurting for a few days and just told me about this. Oh boy, so here we go again...

ANYWAY - Ever need a quick lesson that even the little ones can enjoy? Print this out on white cardstock, cut them out, and then laminate them. This small version can be put inside a snack size plastic bag and placed in your scripture case for easy storage. I used to carry a simple version I made with plain paper and crayons in my scriptures as a missionary. I taught Lesson 18 in the Joseph Smith Manual last Sunday. Although that only covers part of the plan - go back to lesson 17 to get the first part of it. I figured it was just the push I needed to finally use Adobe Illustrator to 'draw' these illustrations of our Heavenly Father's Plan of Happiness.

I made a large version for the chalk board, but this small version is great for use in Family Home Evening, small classroom settings, or Visiting Teaching - used it just the other day with a Sister just getting back into activity. You can even give it as a gift for someone going on an English speaking mission. I will be working on making an Elder to add to the plan. Hopefully you'll see it sometime in the next few weeks. I'm also sharing this at The Errand of Angels Blog.

getting back in business

Well, I am almost back in business, meaning, almost over the flu. CJ had it for 4 days, HK had it for one, and I've had it for 4. I got ready for church this morning and ended up crawling back in bed. I went right back to sleep. I am still a little nauseated, but I think things will be even better by morning. In fact I am already yawning like crazy. Good thing, with school and dance tomorrow and loads of laundry. Tyler helped a TON and scrubbed the kitchen down - all the pots and pans, ran the dishwasher, vacuumed and mopped. What a man! So helpful and I so appreciate that!

A tender Moment

You need a few of these tender moments in the middle of all the chaos. BUT this is a very strange sight around our house, one reason we had to capture it on camera. Hk loves to cuddle, but CJ HATES it. He is usually beating up his sister trying to get my attention or take her spot. Who knew it would be followed by a night full of the flu. I mean every 15 minutes for 4 hours. I had the washer and dryer going all night. Of course, it just slowed down after that, it didn't stop until 8pm tonight. That was last night. HK is taking her turn tonight. That is why I am on the computer at 1 a.m. I couldn't sleep anyway. So we'll probably spend lots of time curled up reading in bed tomorrow.

It's Officially FALL!

Haeley let us know that Sunday, Sep 21st, was the first day of FALL! We went camping last night and then walked around the nearby lake. Things are definitely changing up there. And I absolutely love Autumn.

We had a breakthrough last night - both kiddos slept the entire night with no problems and they stayed completely inside their sleeping bags instead of rolling out and getting cold.

It did rain on us a little but we were mostly protected from leaks and we all stayed dry.

The kids had a great time watching the fire and sitting far enough away for ME to feel comfortable about it. We roasted marshmallows and ate tinfoil dinners.

Although I am a bit exhausted because the rain kept waking me up, I am grateful for the peace I felt up there. I feel happier inside and more relaxed.

And I am so grateful for the chance to give my children these kinds of experiences. They love it and we love it. Haeley is a girly girl but she loves camping and I am very grateful for that.

And our dear friends Greg and Erin went with us and they brought yummy hot chocolate mix to warm us up. They'd never seen the lake and there couldn't have been a better time for them to see it - well except that we didn't get to walk all the way around because of the lightning and rain! Regardless, it was a wonderful little overnight camping trip!

Haeley's Photography!

Last night, I gave Haeley a little photography lesson. You know, this wide angle lens is fun, but she needed to know how to focus it. We talked about how and where to focus it and how to change where the focus is in the lens (mine only has 5 points of focus). We also talked about background. She crouched down on the ground and got most of her shots. She got close and far away. She went on a photo safari in her own backyard and she was so proud of herself when she got done. Then we looked at them on the computer and she chose her favorites. She gets to enter one in the PTA contest at her school. I think it will be the first photo you see here, but it was hard for her to choose. Today I am going to teach her how to upload it to our lab and she will get to choose what size - it has to be mounted and sprayed - although it might look cool on metallic paper - I have to let her decide all on her own. Either way, fun stuff for being 6!

a good day

today is a good day because:
I get hydro-seed today - that means that next spring we will have a lawn the kiddos can play on for a change.
Hk has dance. She loves dance class!
I already uploaded a clients photos and processed them and it's only 9am
CJ is just waking up
I cleaned my kitchen counters and picked up all the clutter in my room and bathroom as well as HKs room.

Now I get to play with CJ in the dirt as I mark off the garden areas so they don't spray them with hydro-seed.
Did I mention I get my dirt covered up with hydro-seed?

I went to a very small high school

OK, so for 9th and 10th I went to a big high school in Alaska, but for 11th and 12th I went to a very small school on a military installation in the middle of the desert near the salt flats of Utah. My dad was air field commander out there. My class was the largest ever, which is really not saying much. Anyway, we made some good friends out there. And we just had a school reunion, well sort of. It was more like a Dugway get together because so many of our parents attended as well. If you are from Dugway and want to attend next year, I will forward the info to you. It will be the first Saturday after Labor Day weekend. I completely spaced the fact that I know where some Dugway-ites are, that others don't. Chemo Brain! My decision to go was last minute because luckily my BIL changed the time of their daughter's baby blessing to an earlier time and I was able to attend both events. Tyler and I drove down and picked up my mom and we drove to Draper - not Dugway - since most of us don't live there anymore. One of the families that attended drove over from Dugway, but the rest of us are living all over the state and some in Arizona. Maybe you read the article on Jamie Gibson Hartly in the March 2006 issue of the LDS Ensign Magazine. Jamie and I went to high school together. In fact, her older brother, Ben, was in my class. I was really excited to see her at the reunion and meet her husband. HK couldn't help but hug Jamie. Jamie was really nice because every time she turned around, there was HK, wanting to give her a hug. HK doesn't usually do that with people she just met, but I think she sensed Jamie's kind spirit. It was interesting to see where everyone has gone with their lives. I gained strength from hearing their stories and how they have grown through their trials. I haven't been to Dugway since Trishelle got married. I shared my cancer story as well after several questions and how so much good came from it. It was good to share it again. I don't want to forget how much good came from it.

Every once in a while I see the resemblance between HK and I. There was something about this photo, besides the fact that I am zoning out, where I saw a little of me in her. I just wanted to write that down since it rarely happens.

Foam Haunted House

It took us several days to get this one done, but here it is! Haeley was a pro helping with the glitter - and there was lots of it to apply. We had fun together and I can hardly wait to display this in our living room.

Boo!

Haeley and I have been busy with projects for Fall. We made a large foam haunted house that was covered with Glitter - it is too cute. I'll post that later

Then we went to Michaels craft store. I bought wooden letters - the small one with the white background. The larger block looking letters are cardboard. I bought everything at Michael's, including the paper and spiders from K and Company. Drill holes in the cardboard ones so that you can loop them together with ribbon. Paint the edges of the letters with flat black paint. trace your letter onto the paper. Then I mod-podged the paper to the letters. I didn't put it on the front of the paper because this paper had glitter on it and I wasn't sure what would happen. Once dried I sanded the edges of the paper to get them just right and added black ink to the edges of the paper. On the small Boo I hot glued the ribbon between the pieces and put dots of hot glue to keep it from scratching the wall. On the large BOO I took a piece of wire and folded it in half and used it to pull the ribbon through. I tied the ribbon and then pushed the knot down inside the letter for a clean look. Last of all I added the spiders. It was a fun project.

Today Tyler went to work for a couple of hours. We had corn on the cob for dinner along with baked potatoes and grilled pork chops. I grabbed the corn out of the garden and threw them on the grill. 10 minutes each side. We've tried this twice and boiled the corn once in between. The grilled version was so much more tender it was unbelievable. And it's probably better vitamin wise. Anyway, grill some corn and you'll see what I mean. After you are done grab the end with a pot holder and peel the husk back and then bend the end off and you are ready!

Camera RAW instruction

Using Camera Raw is like having a negative to go back to each time you adjust your photo. When you adjust a jpeg and save it, it is changed forever, unless you save it with a different name. And if you save and re-save it several, the photo becomes more and more pixelated. Did you know that? Not with RAW. We use to use RAW just for family portraits that were going to be enlarged to 20x30 or larger, but with CS3 there are so many more options that make my life easier that I use RAW when ever I get the chance. Now let me tell you, RAW is easier with my Nikons than it is with my Dad's Canon - but I guess once you get the hang of it, it will be okay whatever camera you have. Mostly it was difficult to install the Canon camera RAW plug-in. Of course, since it makes such a big file, we have had to upgrade to a larger card - well several larger cards. The 2GB pro card I just bought cost me $50. Oh and I use compact flash, not SD. But whatever you use, RAW is incredible and quick. Today I am showing a few of the things I adjusted with a quick slider for my garden photos. There is also a way to take what you did to one RAW photo and add it to several all it once while in Adobe BRIDGE, but I'll get to that later.

Here is how I quickly added contrast and brightened my photo. The nice thing about RAW is that if you decide a year from now that you don't like what you did, you select camera RAW default and you can start over again. It always keeps a knowledge of its original settings.


Here is another screen you can choose in RAW and here I added the dark Vignette. Yes, a slider, well 2, and it took me all of 3 seconds to get it the way I wanted. It's not perfect for all photos, but for this it was the best and the easiest way to vignette.


I would not normally vignette with white, but I have with some snow photos of my daughter and that is the only time I have used the white.

Chicago

I finally scrapbooked one page from our one week trip in August. It was half business - Tyler had an LPL conference in Chicago and then we wanted to visit Nauvoo. We flew into Chicago and out of St Louis. Super fun trip. I'll tell you more later!

First of all, Tyler is home and doing well. He is more sore today, he ate mashed potatoes and gravy yesterday, and can't even look at them today without his throat hurting. I'm keeping him on top of his pain meds and things are progressing the way the doctor said they would.

And onto How to Photograph your garden harvest just like this:
First of all, pick your veggies. I placed them on a table on my porch, and area that was in the shade. Shade is a great place to photograph. I had light coming in from the side and from behind the veggies. Do you know that when lighting food, most places light from behind to add texture and depth?

Setting things up, I walked around them and looked at them.
#1 I didn't like how the white table took the stage
#2 bad angle, clutter in the background
#3 better angle, but boring - needs more color, still a little clutter
#4 better angle, less table, dang bbq grill!
#5 hmmm, too low. oh, where are my chilies?
#6 that's better, almost there, I don't want the focus to be on the pumpkins
#7 up a little, over a little to get rid of the bbg grill. ah hah, focus on the carrots (a low f-stop like 4 can provide this kind of depth of field - the chilies out of focus and the beans out of focus) - We have a winner - use the vignette tool from camera raw photoshop settings, increase brightness - all done

he's finally getting his tonsils out on Wednesday

Tyler, my husband, is getting his tonsil out tomorrow. After 4 cases of strep in 3 months and giving it to the whole family, the doctor finally consented to cutting those puppies out. I had mine out at 21 and well, it was like swallowing barb wire for about 2 weeks and then a bad sore throat for the next week after that. But he had his appendix out while I was undergoing chemo two years ago and he did amazingly well. He bounces back super fast and feels very little pain. He gets that from his mom I think. Lucky him! I'm a total wimp when it comes to surgically induced pain. Anyway, the one major risk with tonsillectomies as an adult is excessive bleeding. He's had a priesthood blessing, but it always adds to a blessing when prayers of faith are offered as well. So if you think of him Wednesday August 27th and wouldn't mind offering a little prayer, we'd appreciate it. We'll be up early, he's the first one in line!

Back to School

I'm still fighting with the colors on this layout, to me, there is something that is just not right but I can't put my finger on it. But I don't have time to be that fussy right now. And Hk will be wondering why I haven't posted her back to school photos yet. So here it is: My little First Grade Ladybug:

You know, after a fun and busy summer, getting back to school is a break for me. Hk loves riding the bus, taking her own lunch, and socializing a whole lot more than at home. And CJ is more at peace. He loves having more one on one time and I love getting to know him a little better.

our harvest

Last night we harvested some of our green beans and then we had to thin the carrots again. At least this time, we can eat them. They are small and delicious. My pepper plants are laying on their sides because the peppers are so big and I don't have stakes for them. It looks like I might end up with a few tomatoes after all, but they are all still green. The corn will be done fairly soon. And each of my little kiddos wanted a pumpkin and luckily we had 2 baby pumpkins that were ready. The kohlrabi was ready two - we've harvested 2 others. I need to make stir fry tonight with the beans, kohlrabi, carrots, etc. I bought some cabbage the other day and sesame seeds. We'll see what we can come up with!

Where have we been?

Tyler had a business conference in Chicago this year along with his Dad and Uncle. Sharla and I shopped the Magnificent Mile and had a blast (although I didn't buy much - still not much in the way of petites). I'll tell you more about it later, I have to get Haeley ready for school shopping and her first day of dance class!

County Fair

I entered 3 photos in the County Fair this year.
This is what I won: Director's Choice


The kids and I had some fun walking around the fair yesterday afternoon, but since I was wearing the wrong shoes we only got a peak at the cows and we didn't get to see our neighbor's lambs. But we did pig out on cotton candy.

Last night we photographed a bride and groom at the Logan Temple. As we were out by the large front gate someone came up and photographed them from behind us. We realized since it was 8/8/08 it was someone from the newspaper, but it was sort of weird at first. Funny thing is that they are getting married today. We photograph at night to reduce the busyness of the actual wedding day and we get better light, their hair and makeup is fresh and their flowers and hair and tux, etc. It makes for a much better wedding day. Tyler will be busy all day with them as they bought the Diamond Package. And I will photograph tonight at their reception along with Tyler . But they are a great couple to work with and it will be fun. I love weddings, what can I say?

Hk's Accomplishments

I have to record Hk's Accomplishments before I forget how great she did this summer. She's not been in a pool since she was 2 and I really wanted her to take swim lessons this summer. So I paid for 8 weeks (4 sets, 4 days each week) of swim lessons this summer. Even Cj and I got in the water together for the mom and tot class for 8 days - hence the kidney infection - I am just not ready for public places yet I guess. Anyway, she started out in level 2. Her teacher was really great at technique and she excelled. The next teacher I had to tell him to give her a chance and see what she can already do because he was treating her like the 3 year old class. Things got much better after that. Level 4 she had a female teacher and an all girl class. She moved to the deep end. She could now swim all the way across instead of just half way. She learned to breath on her side but still really struggled. For her las set, she had Michael again from her first class and again he was a pro at technique. This time Hk was the only girl in an all boy class, Level 5, and they were all at least 3 to 4 years older than her. And she kept up totally. We talked about turning like an airplane to breath instead of a teeter totter but still, she struggled with breathing on her side. It took me a while to breath on my side during the front crawl (freestyle stroke). Anyway, being the persistent little fish that she's become this summer, she did very well and on the last day, her last time across the pool, I watched her swim across and breath on her side perfectly. It literally took my breath away to watch her. I was amazed. In junior high I was on the swim and dive team (then I moved to a place that only had a pool in the summer months). Then I was a lifeguard for 7 years and swim instructor for 3, so this feat of hers was really amazing for me to watch. And then as we left, they gave us stickers for her Certificate and said that she passed Level 5 and 6. Good job Hk! Great work!

good news, bad news

Good News - 18 months and counting...
That's right, it's been 18 months and I am still cancer free. Had my test last Wednesday. Got the results today.

That leads me to today. Why would I get my results on a Sunday?

All 4 of us headed into the Instacare today instead of church.

It was $100 to check in and $100 for meds. That doesn't count the deductibles we haven't met yet - although Tyler is getting pretty close. He has had strep 4 times now this year (the last 3 months to be exact) and he is having his tonsils out the end of August.

BUT TODAY ALL 4 OF US TESTED POSITIVE FOR STREP!

So Tyler is on a new type of antibiotic. Lucky for us he doesn't have mono which they tested him for. The kids are on amoxcil and I am on a very strong broad spectrum antibiotic because I have strep AND the kidney infection is NOT gone even after all those strong antibiotics I took a little over a week ago for 5 days. We celebrated tonight with large glasses of homemade milk shakes after dinner.

I would love to be able to catch up with my laundry, dishes, and chores in general. But that is going to have to wait a few more days...

Why WE go to church...

I've been thinking so much lately about the process of life. We learn as we go - meaning that it doesn't all come to us at once. We continue to go to church each week and have family home evening each week, gaining little bits each time. We read our scriptures as a family nightly and then as adults we study on our own as well. Sometimes I struggle in getting everything done that needs to be done in a day - do I chose the better part? Sometimes I wonder if I am making a difference in my children's lives. And then there are days like these when an inspired Primary teacher did make a difference and made my life better because of it. Today they taught Haeley about sharing. She came out of her class with two homemade chocolate chip cookies and immediately handed one to her brother Coleton. And then she said, I want to SHARE with Coleton. She handed me this picture she had colored and we talked about it. I hugged her and told her it made my day that she was so willing to share with her brother. It's been a crazy summer with lots of whining and hitting and arguing between those two, so hopefully this is a breakthrough. I am going to post this photo on the wall in her room and hopefully this will not be last time we talk about sharing and how great she did today.

Memories

I wasn't feeling too hot yesterday (or for the last few weeks for that matter) and the medicine they put me on is pretty yucky but I am just starting to feel better. Tyler has strep throat again! He just went in on the 4th for it. And it's the 3rd time in about 2 months. He meets with a specialist tomorrow and they are probably going to yank those tonsils out. Anyway, CJ took a nap and Hk played at her cousin's house in the afternoon. I tried to take a nap but the phone rang several times just as I was drifting away and so that was the end of that. But I stayed in bed and picked up a book by Becky Higgins on Family History Scrapbooking. So I got the bug. I've been working on scanning tons of old photos I found recently - after organizing them in white notebooks with page protectors (thanks Becky). I've been doing family history scrapbook pages as a Christmas gift for my family and I am behind - as in I haven't made a single page this year. This photo is one of only a few I have with my Grandpa on my Dad's side. I was curious about it because I remember that Viking hat. My dad didn't remember anything about the hat, but he did remember so many other wonderful things like the veggies at the fair in Fairbanks - they measure the zucchini in TONS! Can you believe that? Anyway, my Dad told me so many wonderful things that I moved the pattern paper on the right under the cream paper and put the rest of his journaling on there. I'm keeping my family history pages very simple and although I had made this page yesterday I quickly browsed the gallery at the Simple Scrapbooks Magazine Site and then I added the 4 little flowers. This is all digital of course and all the paper is from the LaCreimerie Citro Kit by Katie Pertiet of Designer Digitals. I've been dying to use the kit and it is perfect with the barn, my red dress, and my mom's red hair.

Memory

First, Hk got to be responsible today. Earlier this summer HK dumped her bike helmet on the floor in the garage. Unfortunately, that spot on the garage floor was under the rear tire of my car. So, today she payed for her own bike helmet with money she earned from doing chores. I am really hoping this helps to teach her to take better care of her things. "Ownership does wonders" as my MIL says. Hopefully this is true.

MEMORIES:

This one's going around. I thought it'd be ... interesting to read some memories. And it fits because I went visiting teaching the other day to a lady whose daughter was back in town. I could clearly remember when I met her daughter, at a church activity, about 12 years ago and I could tell she couldn't remember me at all (that's because she had her eye on Ry* P* the whole time - they later married). My memory is hit and miss sometimes too. What about yours?

upcoming county fair - I need your input!

First, I have to admit something...yesterday was one of those days. Cj didn't want to be in the water for swim lessons, Hks teacher wasn't teacher her anything new, and I was feeling exhausted. We came home, showered, ate microwaved chicken nuggets, and I sat down on the couch, then I had to get up to put a very fussy Cj down for a nap, and then I took a nap myself while Hk listened to her hand-me-down ipod. I made dinner (spaghetti) and Tyler got home and I crashed on the couch. I spent just a few minutes retouching a few photos and uploaded them for printing. Then it was off to never never land for me. Oh and there was that one moment when I had to answer the door and I looked far from my best (at least I had washed my hair and brushed my teeth but that was the extent of getting ready for the day for me). My FIL said, "not feeling good today?" to which I replied, "I still have a few of those days now and then." At least it's been a while.

Today Cj enjoyed swim lessons and actually laughed a few times. Hk swam all the way across the pool doing the crawl, breathing on the side and everything, without flippers. She was so excited. She is 6, I wish I could have been that good at 6. It took my breath away to watch and this amazing feeling filled my heart as I watched her conquer the water with determination and without complaint. Oh and I made death by chocolate (wheat free) and that makes my day better all by itself.

Oh, we got a new niece on Sunday - 8 lbs 15 oz and 1 day early. My kids now have 12 cousins on one side of the family. I had a total of 3 growing up so this is pretty cool stuff.

The County Fair is coming up in August and I am going to enter a few print, my husband, and my daughter are going to as well. There are 5 catagories and each person can only enter one in each catagory:

I have to decide right away but I can't decide and need some input. I've only printed 2 of these so far.
